As the leaves begin to change colours and the air starts to chill, it’s a reminder that fall is quickly approaching. The change of weather also reminds us of challenges that older adults and seniors should prepare for to maintain an active lifestyle safely.
For starters, consider getting a flu shot. Adults over the age of 65 are at a great risk of complications from influenza. Along with the importance of flu shots for seniors, maintaining a high level of cleanliness and proper hygiene such as washing hands more frequently and using hand sanitizers are a great way to be proactive!
With daylight time shrinking, consider wearing a piece of reflective clothing or even using a light when spending any time outside in the early morning or late evening. Clover Living’s residents enjoy being outdoors as much as possible, which makes it extremely important to be visible when they’re out and about.
It’s also important to dress warmly as the weather patterns begin to change. Calgary weather is often unpredictable, so dressing in layers is a great way to be prepared for any fluctuations in temperature. Having proper footwear to prevent slips and falls is also especially important for seniors, as the fall season can bring rain and snow (sometimes in the same day!).
Maintaining an active outdoor lifestyle is important for most seniors and older adults. Being prepared and proactive allows them to enjoy this safely!
